Color-critical work also requires taking into account ambient light in the workspace, and necessitates neutral colors in the area surrounding the display. Color drifts over time for various reasons, so that recalibration is essential if you want to maintain accurate output.Ĭalibration, whether done with a full-on calibration tool or crudely by adjusting the GPU driver's output, creates a custom ICC profile that overrides the default. Simply installing an ICC profile doesn't mean you're getting a calibrated display, only that the monitor, when new, will give you something close to the manufacturer's intent.

This method works for installing the ICC profiles for Windows Vista, 7, 8 and 10. That’s how easy it is to load an ICC profile. After that, go to the ‘Advanced‘ tab where you will have to click on the Change system defaults first, then ‘Advanced‘ again and tick the ‘Use Windows display calibration‘. It creates an Microsoft ExchangeT« Profile automatically so you never need to walk users through the setup wizard again. Tick ‘Use my settings for this device‘ option and then ‘Add‘ the ICC profile. There are plenty of games out there that will use the desktop colour settings as their baseline, meaning that they will be able to use at least some of the data contained in the ICC profiles.

You can wreck the color rendering by altering the brightness and contrast settings, for example, but the ICC profile will at least remove any hardware-specific peculiarities from the color rendering. The IntelliAdmin Profile Generator is a command line program that can be called from your logon script. If you’re using a monitor with a good colour setup from the OSD there is really no need to apply an ICC profile for any game, but that can’t be said for all monitors unfortunately.
The ICC profile isn't the whole story, by a long way. TFT Central maintains a database of ICC profiles and OSD (on-screen display) settings for current and past models from most manufacturers. Less expensive graphics monitors and all office-grade monitors are not, and usually aren't capable of more than about 90% of sRGB. Professional-grade monitors are often pre-calibrated for 100% sRGB and >99% of Adobe RGB. The ICC profile acts as an intermediary, to adapt the standard output from the OS, applications, or videos to the specific characteristics of that display, so that it will achieve some subset of the sRGB gamut (or something the manufacturer fondly believes is "pleasing"). That's one reason on-screen colors in most offices are so ridiculously variable. Worse, an ICC profile for the original monitor that came bundled with a computer may still be in place three monitors later, with horrible results. Sometimes you might want to assign an sRGB ICC Profile to your monitor to verify whether a display problem is caused by a corrupt monitor profile. This is helpful if you need a more exact match between the colors on the monitor with a particular device e.g., camera, printer, scanner or if you simply want enhanced color display. (True of any device that produces visual output, including printers.) Usually the profile comes on a CD, which seldom escapes from its sleeve, so that the profile never makes it onto the computer. Color profiles, known as ICC or ICM files, contain settings data that can let you recalibrate how the colors appear on your monitor. Any monitor worth the buying price will have a basic ICC color profile which should be downloadable from the manufacturer's website.
